Our story
Our Story
A halal, family-owned Bengali-American café where tradition meets modern comfort — and where “first cup” means both your first sip of the day and the start of our family’s journey in Astoria.
The name
Your first cup — and our first chapter
“First Cup” carries two meanings we love. It’s your first cup of chai or coffee — the little ritual that starts the day right. And it’s the first chapter of our family’s story: a brand-new café we opened on the corner of 36th Avenue in Astoria’s Little Bangladesh, pouring the chai we grew up on.
We wanted a space where tradition meets modern comfort — a warm, bright, floral corner where the whole neighborhood could connect, unwind, and enjoy a great cup of chai. স্বাগতম — welcome in.
The kitchen
Halal, made with love
Everything we serve is halal. We’re a family, and we cook and pour like it’s for family — masala chaa in a carved clay cup, gulab jamun lattes, doi fuska, samosa chaat, a Dhaka chopped cheese, a slow-cooked shahi haleem on the weekend. Bengali flavors, a modern café, and a menu that keeps growing.
Our corner
A third place for the neighborhood
Board games to borrow, wifi for the work-from-café crowd, a welcome for your dog, and prices that make it easy to stay — chai under $3. First Cup is meant to be the neighborhood’s living room: a bright little corner where every age and background can sit side by side.
